How the effect is applied

Instant Damage is classified as a bad effect. Duration, amplifier behavior, particles and sources depend on the command, potion, beacon, mob or game event that applies it.

Applies a status effect to a target.
@p
The nearest player to where the command runs.
minecraft:instant_damage
The namespaced identifier for Instant Damage.
60
The duration in seconds.
0
The zero-based amplifier; 0 means effect level I.

This example applies level I for 60 seconds. Instant effects and non-command sources can behave differently.
